How to prepare for your Engagement session

Feeling overwhelmed? Never been in front of the camera before? Don't know what to wear?

There are so many things that clients worry about prior to their session, and I get it. It can be stressful because you want it to be perfect in every aspect.

To help relieve some of the “pre-session anxiety," I am going to share my best tips and tricks for you as a client, coming from your Kentucky Wedding and Lifestyle Photographer.

Right off the bat, you are going to be like "seriously?" Probably want to click off, but this first one is the most important, as cliché as it sounds.

Be yourself— Yup, I know, cliché. But it is so true; the best images and sessions come from those who are their most authentic form throughout the session. This ties in with so many other tips I’m going to share with you, so keep on reading!

Coordinate outfits DO NOT match- A lot of times clients think if one person wears a white top with denim jeans, the other person has to wear a white top with denim jeans. While this can be cute for some sessions, it is not ideal for all of them. By coordinating instead you allow for your photos to have some depth. So here are some examples of coordination: Girl wears a white maxi dress with black heels, Boy wears a white button down, black dress pants, and either white or black dress shoes. This way you are still chic and cohesive, without being completely matchy-matchy.

Make your session personal- Are you high-school sweethearts? Did you meet at a coffee shop? Whatever you feel is an important part of your relationship, it can always be included in your session. We can shoot at your high-school, or in the coffee shop you met at, we can shoot on a pickleball court if that’s your favorite hobby together. We can have a paint session if you guys like to paint together. The truth is, making your session about YOU will always bring out the best photos + they will mean more to you!

Expect the unexpected— Engagement sessions are full of excitement, joy, and surprises. But like any photoshoot, sometimes things don't go as planned. Weather can change, unexpected things can happen, or even last-minute nerves can throw a wrench into things. But some of the best moments come from those that are unplanned.

Weather may have a mind of its own.

What to expect: Rain, wind, or even an unexpected change in the temperature can change the entire vibe of your shoot.

How to embrace it: If it rains, don't let it ruin your mood! The rain can create a moody, romantic atmosphere and give us the chance to get creative with umbrellas or wet hair shots. If the weather turns windy, it can add movement and drama to your photos. Sometimes, a few clouds or misty skies actually provide the best lighting, making your images soft and dreamy.

Pro Tip: If you have an outdoor session planned, bring a stylish umbrella just in case!

Outfits can get a little messy.

What to expect: Whether it’s a trip, or a spill, or mud, sometimes outfits don't stay pristine throughout the shoot.

How to Embrace it: Don't stress about a little dirt or a stained shirt— these things happen! Some of the most genuine, candid moments are born from these little mishaps. A spontaneous laugh after a wardrobe malfunction or playful moment when your partner helps you clean up can add the perfect personal touch.

Pro Tip— If you are shooting outdoors, wear shoes that are comfortable for walking and make sure to bring a backup outfit!

You might feel a little nervous ( and that’s okay!).

What to expect: It’s totally normal to feel a little nervous or awkward in front of the camera, especially if you’re not used to being photographed.

How to Embrace it: A little nervous energy can actually lead to some of the most genuine and authentic shots. Instead of trying to hide your nerves, embrace them! Laughter, sweet moments of reassurance, and quiet glances can make for beautiful photos.

Pro Tip: Try focusing on your partner - laugh together, share a private joke, or just enjoy the moment. When you are having fun together, it will show in your photos.
